What does "Listed Pitcher" mean when betting baseball?

The term “listed pitcher” is used in betting on baseball. It simply means that when you make your wager on baseball and ask for listed pitchers, the two scheduled starting pitchers must start the game, if they do not your bet is called off and your money is returned to you, in other words you will not have any action.

When placing your baseball wager you can choose to have both pitchers from both teams listed or you can choose to just have one pitcher listed from one of the teams. If you choose both pitchers, they must both start the game and are each required to only throw one pitch for your bet to be active. If there is a change with either pitcher for any reason the bet will be inactive and your money wagered will be returned.

If you choose to list just one pitcher than he, alone, needs to start the game for your baseball bet to be valid. When you list just one pitcher and the opposing pitcher is changed you will receive the opening adjusted line, and still have a valid bet. If you simply bet the game without having any listed pitchers and either pitcher is changed you will again receive the opening line on the team you bet. Just about every time one or both pitchers is changed before a baseball game the line or odds will change.

When betting on the totals in baseball, the over and under, you automatically receive the listed pitchers. If there is any change in those pitchers from the time you make your wager until the start of the game your bet will be called off and your money will be returned to you.

If you bet the first 5 innings of the baseball game, either on the side  (the team) or on the total (over / under) you usually cannot receive the listed pitchers. If there are any changes to the pitchers prior to the start of the baseball game you will automatically receive the opening adjusted line.

These rules are standard for Las Vegas Casinos Sports Books and are regulated by the gaming commission, and the casinos are required to follow them. Some online Sports Books may have different rules so it would be wise to check out their rules before making any wagers on any sport.

I personally believe there are two basic ways to bet on baseball. You are either betting on the strength of the baseball team or the strength of the starting pitchers. Whether you are betting on the pitchers strength only, or even partially, it is a wise move to list the pitchers. If you are betting on a team, like following a winning or losing streak or some other pattern, then you probably should not list the pitchers. There is nothing worse than to find out your pitcher did not start and you did not list him and you lost your baseball wager.
