Its almost the midway point of the MLB season, and so its time to review the performance of some of the top prospects in the game.
Detroit Tigers - Bruce Rondon - RP
Detroit Tigers - Bruce Rondon - RP
Rondon we noted was a power reliever, and he showed it during his time down with Toledo, striking out 40 batters in 29 and 2/3 innings. He allowed hitters just a .139 batting average, and stranded 80.3% of the runners that did get on base. His time with the parent club hasn't gone as smoothly though, where through his 6 games he's posted a 7.71 ERA. He's been at least a little unlucky, with a .421 BABIP in his 4 2/3 innings of work, but his last outing he was able to preserve the Tigers lead over the Jays. If he can build on that performance going forward he should stick with the club since he should be done dominating AAA competition.
Bauer was the top named billed in a trade between the Indians and the D-Backs this year, and for good reason. The eccentric hurler has a good fastball and a devastating curve. He hasn't been able to put it all together this season though, posting his lowest strike out rate (21.7%), his second highest walk rate (12.5%) and a 4.95 FIP. A lot of it can be traced to struggles when he's fallen behind in the count, where batters are averaging .353 against him. His 4 starts for the big league club have been just about as bad, pitching just 17 innings and surrendering 3 HRs and 16 walks. Bauer needs to get some ore work on his control at the minor league level before he's really ready to assume any role with a major league club.
Sano started the year with the Twins High A affiliate Fort Myers team, playing in 56 games before getting promoted to the AA team in New Britain. In Florida he continued his power swinging ways, OPSing 1.079 with a .424 OBP, best of his minor league career. Upon his promotion though he struggled, just going 2-18 through his first 7 games. His last 10 have been much better, where he's hit 4 home runs, a pair of doubles and a triple. This power surge has helped drive his ISO to .348 in AA play, a career best. His strikeouts, which had been down a full percentage point in Florida are far up though, to just over 30% of his at bats. Sano still needs to get better with his glove though, where he has 6 errors in just 21 games.
Sanchez has spent the season in Charlotte, with the AAA affiliate Knights. The defensive minded midfielder has struggled with his bat this year, but is building on his short stint in AAA last year. A .055 ISO shows his limited power, but its a small improvement from last year and he has seen a decrease in strikeouts and a much improved walk rate. He has also been slightly unlucky, with just a .280 BABIP, and his last 10 games have been a much better situation, with his bat showing some life with 4 doubles, and he's stolen a pair of bases. He does have 7 errors in his 76 games this year, which is a little high especially now that he's playing mostly at 2B.
Starling was a super athletic prospect the Royals took in the first round in 2012. He was able to dominate Rookie league ball last year, and has spent this season in Lexington with the A level affiliate. His season hasn't been overly remarkable this year, posting just a .319 wOBA and a .692 OPS. He also has posted a miserable 27.5% strikeout rate, and has walked just 9.2% of the time. A lot of this can potentially be traced to his need for Lasik surgery in May, with his last 10 games being much better with a .351 OBP and .484 slugging percentage over that time. Starling still struck out 12 times in his 34 at bats over that period though, a number that needs to come down.
